The Meaning of Life Part 2: Absurdism, Existentialism, and “Rick and Morty”

Hey All,

I wanted to make a short post about one of my current favorite cartoons “Rick and Morty” and it’s exploration of the meaning of life. I’ve had more than one conversation about this topic with friends so I wanted to take a minute to share my fast thoughts.

Personally, I would classify the character “Rick” and his belief that nothing matters in the scope of the greater universe as an Existentialist or Absurdist Philosophical belief. These are two distinct philosophies which share a few common ideas. For example, both reject the idea that there is inherent meaning or purpose in the universe i.e. that people are born with a “God” given greater purpose intended for them.

Instead, both of these philosophies suggest that there is no greater purpose and we as individuals must create our own purpose / meaning in life.

If you’re interested in learning more about the philosophies of existentialism please allow me to suggest the following video by crash course:

And if you’d like to hear more about how the meaning of life is discussed in “Rick and Morty” please see this video by the series creator himself Dan Harmon (Also known for the cult hit TV series “Community” )

Finally, for an another person’s perspective on “Rick and Morty” and meaning of life philosophy, here’s another video which I liked:
